Energy Work: The Secret of Healing and Spiritual Development

Energy Work: The Secret of Healing and Spiritual Development

I first learned of Robert Bruce through his work with astral projection. While attending a weekend workshop taught by Bruce, he spoke of his book, Energy Work: The Secret of Healing and Spiritual Development, an excellent companion to many types of spiritual practice. He spent time observing his own energy body feeling for different sensations without following a particular established system.

What’s fascinating is that he discovered through firsthand experience many of the same energy centers and channels taught in other traditions. Bruce has developed a method for teaching anyone how to access and affect one’s energy body using awareness, visualization and breath work.

The book begins with a thorough explanation of the energy body and the benefits of becoming aware of and utilizing it. These benefits include improved physical body functions, self-healing mechanisms, psychic and spiritual development and activation of vital and subtle energies. There are detailed descriptions and illustrations demonstrating how to use one’s thoughts to awaken, move and store energy.

Through a step-by-step process, Bruce moves through various stages of energy work from initial stimulation of energy around each toe and finger, to removing energy blockages and heart center healing. His methods are easy to understand and do not require complicated procedures or rituals. He encourages the use of practice to discover the unique energy properties of one’s own body.

Bruce is especially adept at noting potential side effects of energy work. He explains that while many spiritual traditions focus on activating the higher energy centers, it is equally important to activate the lower energy centers in order to maintain balance. He provides numerous techniques to create and maintain a healthy and active energy body.

I recently completed an online course, Practical Astral Projection Intensive, taught by Bruce along with Bob and Marina Felix. I was reminded of Energy Work since many of the techniques detailed in the book can be applied to supporting and achieving an out of body experience. However, the book goes much further without focusing specifically on astral projection. Bruce’s approach can enhance and be applied to many spiritual or energy practices as there is no attachment to a particular tradition.

Spirit Matters: Down-to-Earth Tools for a Spirited Life

Spirit Matters: Down-to-Earth Tools for a Spirited Life

While much material exists on the imminent planetary shift, in Spirit Matters: Down-to-Earth Tools for a Spirited Life, Jim Self and Roxane Burnett acknowledge this event and offer specific energy techniques to help get through this transition. Echoing my personal goal to experience rather than simply read and intellectualize, there are many practices taught in this book to apply to daily life.

Intentional thinking is the foundation of these exercises. Self says: “Culture is created by group agreements. Group agreements are based upon beliefs. Beliefs are simply thoughts that are repeated. Therefore if we change our individual thoughts, we change the culture.” Mastering our thoughts balances our energy and provides the ability to master our lives.

A fundamental tool consists of an imaginary rose that can be used in multiple situations. Its primary purpose is to create a boundary delineating one’s personal energy from getting mixed with another. A rose can also be used to dispense with limiting beliefs and reduce emotional charges triggered by people or events. My first attempt with a rose technique took place in a Fairfax County, Virginia traffic court room following which I was granted a reduced charge from a potentially serious reckless driving ticket.

Other tools include the use of sacred geometry, specifically creating an imaginary octahedron structure around the body that acts as a force field. The authors describe processes of integrating the emotional, mental, physical and spiritual bodies for optimal balance. Words and colors are used to develop personal attributes and a clearer sense of self.

Together, these tools and more are used to reach a state of alignment with one’s purpose and to manage the specifics of relationships, work and other daily details of living. Self expands on the practices taught in this book with live seminars, free online lectures and teleseminars, and a year-long program called Mastering Alchemy.

Having attended an evening lecture and weekend seminar, I can attest to Self’s sincerity and commitment to these practices. A crowd of people responded positively to his guided meditations and those who had worked with him previously asserted to some amazing changes in their lives.

Plant Spirit Healing: A Guide to Working with Plant Consciousness

Plant Spirit Healing: A Guide to Working with Plant Consciousness

Long-time herbalist Pam Montgomery brings plant spirit shamanism to modern living with her book, Plant Spirit Healing: A Guide to Working with Plant Consciousness. Beyond healing with physical herbal properties, plants have a unique essence that can be tapped into through proper focus. No longer an indigenous myth, there is abundant scientific evidence to back up the existence of plant consciousness. Connecting through the heart, plant energies are able to align humans with the oneness of nature allowing for personal and planetary transformation.

I was struck while reading about the existence of songs associated with specific plant species. According to a Cherokee tradition, plants are able to reveal their songs to individual humans who are ready to receive them. Those who compare notes find they have found the same song for a particular plant. The song is then used in the process of healing and allows for complete knowledge of the plant spirit.

I read this book shortly after attending a “Communicating with All Life” seminar at Omega Institute with Penelope Smith. One of our exercises was to sit with our back against a tree, tune in and ask a series of 4 questions regarding our purpose. I chose a maple tree and was pleasantly surprised to receive thoughtful answers. Such communication often feels like you’re “making it up” and without confirmation from a third party, it can be difficult to ascertain a message’s truth. I have a friend who recommends to “ask the universe” for confirmation by receiving validation from another source.

Montgomery stresses the importance of allowing a plant ally to reveal itself to an individual. Plants often grow near humans who have a need for them. While getting to know a plant may involve touching, smelling, listening and tasting, it is eventually possible to merge with the spiritual energy of the plant. This allows for use of a particular plant’s properties without requiring its physical presence.

Prior to a recent ayahuasca ceremony experience, I wondered if one could bypass potential side effects by communing strictly with the plant’s energy rather than drinking the medicine solution. After becoming violently ill during the ritual, this option became even more curious to explore.

Healers often learn plant communication techniques to assist in their practices, however, individuals are able to bring balance to themselves and to the earth by tuning into plant spirits. An overriding message throughout the book is the importance of connecting with nature in general. When humans rediscover their partnership with all of creation, true transcendence is possible. This, above all, remains my motivation to continue connecting with all nature.
